THE GORGE OF RIHTI

THE GORGE OF RIHTI

One of the most beautiful small gorges of eastern Crete with a an engraved and marked route that follows the banks of the small river, which has running water all year round and forms a lovely waterfall.

It starts a bit further from the village Exo Mouliana and ends at the beach of Rihti, east from the village Kalavro. The total length of the route is about 3,0 km and the altitude difference from the entrance to the exit is about 350 meters and hiking in the gorge takes three to four hours.

The route starts from the stone-arched bridge of Lachanas (19th century) which has a tragic history to tell. During the exchange of populations (between Greece and Turkey), it is said that, at this point, Christians killed the Turks of the region, who were trying to reach Sitia and get the boat to Turkey.

The route continues in a lush landscape in the river, an amazing scenery of Eastern Crete. The mountain is actually above your head. Platans, oleanders and sages are numerous, and the smells of fresh herbs change constantly.

The highlight is, of course, the beautiful waterfall of over 20 meters that forms a small pond below it. The waterfall has water even in summer! Impressive also – footprint of the past – are the old water mills that the visitors meet in their way.

The route finishes in the exit of the gorge in the Cretan Sea.  In the beautiful pebbly beach of Richtis there are enough tamarisk trees, with stone seats and tables. There is also a stone water fountain with water all year round.
